Race course announced for Kenneth Velez memorial run
Residents asked to note traffic pattern, park off street
Participants will use a number of South Lorain streets Aug. 12 for the inaugural Trooper Kenneth Velez 5.11K run and 1-mile fun walk, according to the Lorain Police Department and Auxiliary.
The race commemorates the life and service of Velez, 48, of Lorain. He was an Ohio State Highway Patrol trooper who was struck Sept. 15, 2016, while working traffic enforcement on Interstate 90 in Cleveland.
Velez died of his injuries the same day.
Runners will be on the streets from 8 to 9 a.m. The streets will have an alternate traffic pattern during that time, but will resume normal use at 10:30 a.m., according to city officials.
The race committee is asking residents to park their cars and trucks off the street to make room for runners. Residents also are asked to inform their neighbors of the race.
The affected streets include Pearl Avenue, East 42nd Street, East 41st Street, Yale Drive, East 40th Street, Oakwood Avenue, Homewood Drive, East 37th Street and Lorain Avenue.
The events start at Sacred Heart Chapel, 4301 Pearl Ave. Two local entertainers will perform the morning of the race.
