Supplies drive supports schools

As the first day of school approaches in districts across Lorain County, Clearview Local Schools received a helping hand with donations of school supplies collected by Buckeye Community Bank in Sheffield Lake.

On Aug. 18, Clearview Schools officials were at the bank’s 105 Sheffield Center location to accept a large spread of donations to provide assistance to Clearview students between kindergarten and fourth grade.

Students will start school Aug. 23.

After gathering in the bank’s conference room, bank employees handed over binders, backpacks, arts and crafts supplies that filled up a table, to help students and teachers as the new school year begins.

The collection began in mid-July after Chief Operating Officer Ben Norton reached out to Clearview treasurer Sean Nuccio, who banks with Buckeye, about how they could help.

“We asked him for a list and they gave us a list of school supplies that they needed,” Norton said.

“We had a 100 percent participation rate from our employees. And also, several of our clients donated boxes of school supplies as well.”

Employees collected donations for six weeks for students, and Buckeye saw the opportunity to make a difference for the schools in the community they serve.

In the past, the bank has been involved with Second Harvest Food Bank’s Harvest for Hunger campaign, along with working with Lorain County Metro Parks in helping clean up Lorain’s Lakeview Park. The bank also will work with Helping Hands for Thanksgiving to help provide dinners to lowincome residents.

“Schools are in desperate need of supplies and we know that a lot of teachers dig into their pockets to provide supplies for their kids,” Norton said. “So (the) employee relations (department at the bank) decided it would be a great opportunity for us to support the community.”
