Hispanic Heritage Month underway

- Staff report

The Lorain Historical Society and the Lorain Public Library System are collaborating on a celebration of Hispanic culture and traditions for all residents of Lorain to enjoy.

On Sept. 22, events began with a tour of South Lorain and are continuing throughout the next three weeks with various events held either at the Main Branch, 351 W. Sixth St.; South Branch, 2121 Homewood Drive or at the Carnegie

Center, 329 W. 10th St., according to a media release.

Hispanic Heritage Month traditionally begins Sept. 15 and goes through to Oct. 15, the release said.

It’s celebrated on the 15th because the date marks the independence days of five Latin America countries: Costa Rica, El

Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua.

Mexico, Chile and Belize follow shortly after, on the 16th, 18th and 21st, the release said.

Hispanic Heritage Month “pays tribute to the generations of Hispanic Americans who have positively influenced

and enriched our nation and society,” according to the official website.

Some of the events include a presentation by Eileen Torres on the “Influences of Latin Rhythms on American Popular Music” from noon to 1 p.m., Oct. 7, at the Main Branch; a Hispanic Heritage Story Program from 2-2:45 p.m., Oct. 14, at the South Branch; and culminates in an exhibition by the Museum of Hispanic

and Latino Cultures at the Carnegie Center, according to the release.

The month will end with an exhibition from noon to 4 p.m., Oct. 15, at the Carnegie Center. It will feature Lorain’s Aztec Dance Troupe “Danza Tonantzin,” the release said.

Funding for these programs has been made possible through a grant from the Community Foundation of Lorain County as well as

through funding from the Lorain Public Library System, the Lorain Historical Society and private donations, according to the release.

More details are available on both of the library’s websites as well as the Lorain Historical Society’s website.
