Sports shorts Dolphins’ Landry won’t be charged

-

Prosecutors have decided not to file charges against Miami Dolphins receiver Jarvis Landry over allegations of domestic violence.

The Broward State Attorney’s Office said an investigation determined there was “no reasonable likelihood” of a conviction. The case involved an April 1 encounter between Landry and Estrella Cerqueira, the mother of their daughter.

Cerqueira maintained Landry did not intend to touch her or strike her, but accidentally did so, according to a memorandum filed Monday by assistant state attorney Stefanie Newman. There were no witnesses to the encounter at Landry’s residence, and video surveillance appeared to corroborate Cerqueira’s account, the prosecutor said.

Cerqueira said in the statement in August that the couple had a “vocal disagreement,” but that she never felt physically threatened and that nothing violent took place.

T. J. Warren has signed a $50 million, four-year contract extension with the Phoenix Suns.

The 6-foot-8 forward, nicknamed “Tony Buckets” by teammates, is entering his fourth NBA season. He averaged career highs of 14.4 points and 5.1 rebounds over 66 games last season. After the All-Star break, he averaged 17.6 points and shot 56 percent from the field.

The team announced the deal Tuesday.

Warren was the 17th overall pick out of North Carolina State in the 2014 draft after earning ACC player of the year honors and breaking the school’s season scoring record, set 39 years earlier by David Thompson.

Trent Richardson, the third overall pick of the 2012 NFL draft, has signed with the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the Canadian Football League .

Richardson played two seasons with the Browns before he was traded to the Indianapolis Colts for a 2014 firstround draft pick. He played two seasons in Indianapolis before he was cut by the Colts.

He received a tryout with Oakland in 2015, but did not make the team and was cut by Baltimore last year. Richardson has 2,032 yards rushing and 17 touchdowns in 46 NFL games. Richardson help lead Alabama to two national championships after the 2009 and 2011 seasons and won the Doak Walker Award as the nation’s top collegiate running back in 2011 before declaring for the NFL draft.

Brittney Sykes of the Atlanta Dream leads the WNBA all-rookie team as one of three unanimous selections.

The league announced Tuesday that Sykes joined Allisha Gray of the Dallas Wings and Kelsey Plum of the San Antonio Stars in receiving the most votes from WNBA coaches.

Washington Mystics’ Shatori WalkerKimbrough and Dallas’ Kaela Davis round out the team.

Sykes was the No. 7 pick in the draft. She was the rookie leader in scoring (13.9), rebounding (4.1) and 3-pointers made (37).

Gray was the No. 4 selection and was second among rookies in scoring (13.0) and rebounding (3.9). Plum, the top pick, was injured early in the season, was the rookie assist leader, with a 3.4 average.

Baylor receiver Chris Platt is expected to miss the rest of the season because of a left knee injury. Coach Matt Rhule said Tuesday defensive end Xavier Jones also is likely done for the year because of a broken bone in his foot.

Both Platt and Jones were hurt in the Bears’ 49-41 loss to thirdranked Oklahoma on Saturday.
