Police have identified a suspect in a shooting of a 32-year-old North Ridgeville woman that occurred Jan. 4 on Patton Drive, according to a news release from the city Police Department.

Alwin Carter King III, 29, of Indian Trail, N.C., was arrested at the Red Roof Inn, 29995 Clemens Drive in Westlake, the release said.

King, who was arrested Jan. 5, is facing charges of felonious assault, obstructing official business, weapons under disability, domestic violence and tampering with evidence.

King was arraigned Jan. 8 in Elyria Municipal Court and was at the North Ridgeville Police Department on $350,000 bond.

According to the release, he will be transported to the Lorain County Jail.

King was taken into custody without incident following a police standoff at the Red Roof Inn, according to the release.

Police Capt. Marti Garrow said the victim told police she drove herself to the emergency room at Cleveland Clinic in Avon, telling hospital personnel she suffered an accidental, self-inflicted gunshot wound.

During the investigation, it was determined she was shot in the pelvic area by the male, police said.

The condition of the victim currently is unknown.

Police initially withheld releasing the name of the suspect until they could confirm his true identity.

Garrow said the suspect has an extensive criminal history and had several different aliases and driver’s licenses.

Once the suspect was in custody, he was fingerprinted, and with the help of the FBI , officials learned King’s identity.

King had an active warrant for theft of a motor vehicle through the North Carolina Department of Public Safety, according to the release.

Once authorities obtained a photo of the suspect, it was distributed to local police departments and hotels.

Thanks to the help of the Westlake Police Department, detectives were able to track King to the Red Roof Inn, where he was taken into custody, Garrow said.

A hearing date for King to appear in court had not been set the afternoon of Jan. 8.

North Ridgeville police previously said this incident was not related to Bender Road shooting Jan. 4 that left a 54-year-old Avon woman injured.
