Two arrested in Taylor Street burglary

-

Police arrested two suspects they say broke into an Elyria business Jan. 11.

Jonah A. Smith, 36, and Tanner B. Smith, 29, both of Elyria, are facing charges of breaking and entering, a fifth-degree felony; possession of criminal tools, a fifth-degree felony; and theft, a firstdegree misdemeanor, according to an Elyria police report.

The men were apprehended about 1:10 a.m. on Logan Street shortly after the two were spotted breaking into 975 Taylor St., the report said.

Police questioned both men separately.

Tanner Smith initially told police he didn’t know about the robbery, but later admitted to stealing the items when he was told he would be on the surveillance footage, the report said.

Tanner Smith denied Jonah Smith had any involvement.

However, Jonah Smith later told police he was involved and that the two slid under a chain link fence and stole copper windings, according to the report.

Police found copper windings in a book bag that Tanner Smith possessed as well as a dolly with suitcases outside of 975 Taylor, the report said.

The men admitted to using the dolly to transport the stolen items, according to the report.

The suitcases contained several copper windings, a radiator and a catalytic converter and were valued from $300 to $500.

Both suspects were taken to Lorain County Jail and are out on bond.
