CLASS DRAWS UPON THE BASICS
Drawing class begins just in time for the spring
Spring is here and it won’t be long before flowers are blooming everywhere.
Lorain County Metro Parks presented an art class March 26 at the Miller Nature Preserve, 2739 Center Ridge Road in Avon, for those looking to improve their drawing abilities.
“Today, we are learning how to draw flowers,” said Clela Neale, the class’s instructor. “I bring in a sheet of what I want the students to take from the secession. I also bring in photos for a reverence to get them going.
“The photos, in this case, are flowers that have one prominently in front and a number of the same flower in the background.”
Neale said she starts the class with a 15-minute discussion.
“I like to address the group to lay the plan for the day,” she said. “I tell them what we will use, which for this class is predominantly pencil and then water-colored pencil later on.
“I want them to build onward they have learned from the prior class, and most of the time, I do see

people applying the techniques.”
Neal said teaching the class is something she loves to do.
“First off, this is a great place to hold the class,” she said. “I’ve been with the Miller Nature Preserve for awhile now, and it is a good space.
“It is a very calming space that allows the class members to relax as they enjoy drawing.”
Neale said her class is comprised of both beginners and experienced learners.
“I have a good mix here,” she said.
“I feel it is important to not have only beginners in the class. I like to go around and talk to the new people individually to gauge their level of experience and to get to know them.
“Having more experienced students allow me to do that.”
Martin Thompson, of North Ridgeville, said he has been taking the class for the past five to six years.
“I love the class; it really helps guide my passion for art,” Thompson said. “Drawing always interested me, but it was something I hadn’t really done since I
was in high school.
“It is very convenient having this class so close by. Clela does a good job of centering everything and making it easy to understand and replicate.
“I’d say I have learned a lot from the course and look forward to it every Monday,” Thompson said.
The art class is available from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., Mondays.
Starting May 21, the class will not meet during the summer.
However, it will continue in September.
