Community Day introduces local services to residents

The Eastern Heights West Block Watch in Elyria is inviting neighbors and residents July 28 to its fifth annual Community Day event.

The block watch will provide local resources from noon to 4 p.m. in the University Hospitals Elyria Medical Center parking lot on the corner of East Broad Street and Park Avenue.

Several local food and business vendors, as well as Lorain County services will be in attendance. That includes Elyria City Schools, Elyria police and fire departments, The LCADA Way and Lorain County Board of Mental Health, according to Deb Brady, supervisor of the Eastern Heights West Block Watch and other block watches in the community.

There also will be crafters on hand, face painting and live entertainment, Brady said.

Eastern Heights West Block Watch created the event to introduce services to the 1,200 residents in that neighborhood, she said.

Guests also may attend Community Day, Brady said.

“As a group, we want to make people aware of what’s available in town, like businesses and schools,” she said. “This is for the people who don’t know where to go for certain services and for the people who don’t know who to ask.”

In its five years, the Community Day event has grown immensely, causing organizers to change locations, Brady said.

The Eastern Heights West Block Watch first held their event at McKinley Elementary School on River Street.

As the event grew in attendance, organizers moved to UH.

Brady said she expects the neighborhood to be very busy.

Safety is Eastern Heights West Block Watch’s main priority, she said.

“We’re not only safety, we’re a neighborhood and want to help each other,” Brady said. “There’s so many things many people don’t know about and they need that attention.

“That’s the purpose of what we do; we put people in front of people.”
