Youths from across the country converged on Lorain Historical Society’s Carnegie Center to performed classical music July 20.

Community members were invited to bring a bagged lunch to hear the musical stylings of Credo.

Barb Piscopo, executive director of the society, said the group is made up of students seeking to learn more than just music.

“So Credo is a group out of Oberlin College that is a summer program for students around the country that are proficient in stringed instruments,” she said. “They come and do intensive workshops with some of the professors at the conservatory.”

Piscopo said before the group rosined their bows and tuned their strings they set out into the community along with Church of the Open Door to do a few good deeds.

“Part of their mission is also to get into different communities in the area and actually do a day of service,” she explained. “They’ve been cleaning up the neighborhood, picking up trash and kind of making everything look a little bit better.

“Part of what they’re being taught is that it’s not just about the music, it’s about giving back.”

This isn’t the first time the group paid a visit to the Carnegie Center as last year they also performed, Piscopo said.

She said the society is playing host to more and more musical acts these days.

“We’ve had it quite a bit this year,” Piscopo said. “We had Choral Spectrum perform here for their Christmas concert here.”

She said the society has booked another string ensemble to play for an upcoming event.

“For our ice cream social we’re having another string trio here called Amethyst out of Cleveland,” she said. “They’ll be here Aug. 12.”

And next year seems even brighter for those who like some mood music with their history.

“Next year we are going to have a series of concerts in partnership with the Oberlin Center For the Arts so we will bring more live performances,” she said.

“Not your Rockin’ on the River style,” she said with a laugh.
