Browns trade Coleman to Bills for pick

- By Jeff Schudel

The Browns traded wide receiver Corey Coleman to the Buffalo Bills for an undisclosed draft pick on Aug. 5, the team announced just before 10 p.m.

Trading Coleman, who was having a good training camp with the Browns with no health issues, could mean Josh Gordon will return to the team soon. Three days before camp was to start on July 26 in Berea, Gordon announced he would be absent so he could continue his treatment for substance dependency. Adam Schefter of ESPN was first to report the Coleman trade. He did not report what the Browns are getting in return.

The Browns started off with the second pick in the 2016 draft. Former Director of Football Operations Sashi Brown traded it to Philadelphia for the eighth pick because the Eagles wanted to draft quarterback Carson Wentz.

Brown traded the eighth pick to the Titans (Tennessee took tackle Jack Conklin) for the 15th pick, which the Browns used on Coleman. Coleman was the first wide receiver drafted in 2016.

The Browns got a bundle of additional picks in the two trades. But while they were planning for the future, they went 1-31 the last two seasons. Brown was fired on Dec. 7 last year while the Browns were on their way to an 0-16 finish.

Coleman caught 33 passes as a rookie and 23 passes last season. He missed six games with a broken hand in 2016 and seven with a broken hand last year.

The Browns expected more from Coleman — not just in production but in effort, so the trade comes as no surprise

On Aug. 3, during an interview on WKRK-FM 92.3, Browns general manager John Dorsey confidently said Gordon will return to the Browns, though he did not say when.

“I told you he’d be here, and he will be here,” Dorsey said.

Gordon has played in just 10 of the last 64 games. He missed 53 games for violating league substance abuse policies and one for violating Browns team rules.

Gordon, 27, led the NFL with 1,646 receiving yards in 2013.
