County collects tons of farm tires
The Lorain County Solid Waste District received 63.21 tons of tires during its annual agricultural tire collection.
The Lorain County Solid Waste District received 63.21 tons of tires during its annual agricultural tire collection in September.
According to a new release distributed at the Lorain County commissioners meeting Oct. 17, the collection has been held each year since 2012.
Since then, the Solid Waste District has recycled 426.6 tons of tires, the release said.
Earlier this year, the Solid Waste District received a $25,000 grant from the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency to offset the cost of the collection.
Participants in the yearly event are required to preregister the quantity and sizes of the tires to allow Solid Waste District staff to coordinate the number of semi-trailers necessary to transport them to the recycling facility, the release said.
“This event has been extremely popular for the agricultural community,” Commissioner Matt Lundy said in the release. “It has enabled our local farmers to properly dispose of tires that are typically challenging and costly to dispose of.
“Multiple farms pooled their resources together to haul tires for some farms that were not able to do so. This kind of teamwork is an example of their appreciation for this program.”
