Amherst Public Library allowed children to decorate their own cookies.

The event Dec. 3 at 221 Spring St., “Cookie Storytime,” was in the Carnegie side of the building and drew multiple families enjoying the stories and the decorating.

“We had three books all with the Christmas and baking theme,” said Lisa Stanley, children’s librarian. “Cookies are a big part of Christmas and kids love them. So, it was a good time to do this one.”

Stanley said the libraries storytimes are well attended.

“We usually get a good crowd,” she said. “We don’t have the hurdle of preregistration, so families can come in the day of. I think that makes it more convenient.”

Stanley said the storytimes follow the same formula.

“Three stories usually do the trick,” she said. “The stories typically have quality illustrations, and the one had some sound effects as I turned the pages. We also have some music I play to keep the energy up.”

Stanley said the event’s activity went off without a hitch.

“The cookie decorating was well done by all of them,” she said. “They really did a good job of spreading the icing on the cookies.

“It’s one of those things their parents typically do, so they are glad when they can do it themselves.”

Stanley said she has enjoyed hosting similar events.

“I’ve ended up having the younger siblings of children I had before,” she said. “It’s great to see how these kids get along and learn how they are doing afterward.”

Carine Byda of Amherst said the event was a good one for her daughter.

“My daughter, Madison, loves cookies, so she’s having a good time,” Byda said. “This library is really good, and they often have good events.”

Kathy Deily, of Independence, brought her granddaughter to the event.

“She (Stanley) is amazing,” Deily said. “She does a great job with the children and knows how to keep them engaged.”
