Student achieves perfect ACT score
An Avon Lake High School student achieved a perfect score on the ACT, according to a news release.
Irwin Deng, a 17-yearold junior, joins senior Stephen Forest as the second Avon Lake High student to achieve the feat in 2018, scoring in the top 0.2 percent of test takers.
In addition to his dedication to his schoolwork which includes six advanced placement courses at Avon Lake High, Irwin’s activities include marching band, tennis team, Math Club, Science Olympiad and Academic Challenge.
His interests outside of the classroom include playing piano and composing music, the release said.
This is the second time Deng has taken the test following his first attempt while in eighthgrade, according to the release.
Deng was applying for a summer enrichment program at Duke University and one of the application requirements was to submit an ACT score, which was 31.

score the second time, but I never thought a 36,” Deng said.
He also offered advice for other students.
“Pick classes that you like and be involved in school activities, he said. “Don’t stress too much.”
His goal after graduation in 2020 is to attend Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, Mass.
He’s currently undecided on a major, but would like to take courses related to the STEM field.
He is the son of Ping Deng and Changyun Nie.
The ACT consists of tests in English, mathematics, reading and science. Each test is scored on a scale of 1-36 and a student’s composite score is the average of the four test scores.
