Officer identified in Nov. 25 SWAT stand-off
The Lorain County Sheriff’s Office identified an officer involved in a fatal shooting Nov. 25 in a Camden Township standoff, according to a news release.
LaGrange police Lt. Wayne Ramsey, a member of the Lorain County SWAT Team, was identified Dec. 3 as firing the shot in the incident which ended in the death of a 62-year-old Huron County man, the Sheriff’s Office release said.
The Lorain Police Department is investigating the incident and the Sheriff’s Office is not releasing any further information at this time.
Lorain police Sgt. Buddy Sivert, lead investigator of the probe, said the investigation is ongoing and they are continuing to review video and audio footage in addition to collecting reports from officers on scene.
“It’s a very in-depth investigation,” Sivert said.
Investigators have yet to make a final determination in the case, but noted Ramsey was the only officer who fired a shot during the incident, Sivert said.
At 4:10 p.m., the Sheriff’s Office was advised by the Huron County Sheriff’s Office to be on the lookout for a suicidal male.
The victim was identified by the Sheriff’s Office as Daniel Calala, of the New London area.
Calala was last seen operating a bronze vehicle in the area of state Route 303 and state Route 511 in Camden Township.
A vehicle matching the description was located behind the Camden Township Complex, 50679 Route 303.
Deputies began talking with the man who brandished two firearms.
Deputies took cover and began negotiating. According to the release, the man threatened to shoot the deputies.
Calala refused to surrender and drove west on Route 303 for about a mile.
He then turned his vehicle around and drove toward deputies who were following from a distance, the release said.
Calala stopped and negotiations resumed.
He then made movements that were a threat to deputies and a SWAT team member fired, the release said.
