A Lorain man is facing numerous assault charges, according to a police report.

On Dec. 6 at about 5:05 a.m. Lorain police responded to an address in the 1400 block of F St., following reports of a possible burglary in process.

Officers were advised Matthew J. Bell, a suspect accused of being involved in a Dec. 1 shooting at an address in the 3000 block of Reeves Ave. in Lorain, was at the premises and could be in possession of a handgun.

According to police, Bell broke a window to the residence in order to enter following a verbal argument with a 17-year-old girl.

Police say Bell initially refused orders to exit the residence and surrender and got into a physical struggle with officers, resisting arrest. After officers secured him in handcuffs they were forced to carry him to the cruiser.

Once inside, Bell refused to sit down, telling officers, “I got bullets in my (expletive) from getting shot, I can’t sit down.”

When one officer attempted to place his hand on Bell’s shoulder to secure him in the vehicle, he yelled, “(expletive) you,” and bent his head backward, striking the officer in the forehead with the back of his head, the report said.

Bell was transported to Mercy Hospital in Lorain before being transported to the Lorain County Jail.

A Lorain police officer suffered an undisclosed injury from the altercation and was treated at Mercy.

Bell, 29, is charged with two counts of assault on a police officer, aggravated robbery, felonious assault, obstructing official business, and failure to comply. He is currently being held without bond at the Lorain County Jail.

The incident follows a Dec. 1 incident allegedly involving Bell. At about 7:17 a.m. Lorain police responded to Reeves Ave. for a male who suffered a gunshot wound to the leg.

The victim told police he was shot following an attempted robbery and struggle by a family member of a female occupant of the residence. He described the man as a black male in his mid-20s and missing several teeth, police said.

A witness at the scene described hearing a loud pop she identified as a gunshot while in an upstairs bedroom coming from the main floor of the residence, the report said.
