For years, Jarred Logan has been waiting his turn to step up as the leader Elyria Catholic basketball needs him to be after playing behind the program’s two all-time scorers the past three seasons.

The 6-foot-6 senior totaled 16 points, 20 rebounds, 10 assists and three steals in the Panthers’ 65-56 season-opening win over rival Holy Name on Dec. 7, surpassing the sky-high expectations ELYRIA CATHOLIC 65, HOLY NAME 56

placed on him and establishing a new era at Elyria Catholic in first-year coach Rob Palmer’s debut.

It’s the first time the Panthers have beat Holy Name since Jan. 27, 2017.

The win certainly didn’t come easy for Elyria Catholic (1-0), which despite leading by as many as 12 late in the second quarter, came out after halftime and let Holy Name (2-1) storm right back, and with 6:13 left in regulation, the score was tied at 48 with Logan and near the rest of the starting lineup in serious foul trouble.

Palmer had every confidence in his team, however, and didn’t even think to call a timeout when the Green Wave tied it up.

The Panthers stuck to their defensive-minded game plan and held their opponent to a mere eight points the rest of the way while scoring nearly 20 of their own.

“It was no secret that we kind of lost our composure coming out (of halftime) a little bit,” Logan said. “(Holy Name) tied it up, and as a senior I knew that it was my fault because I got to be the one who takes over and keeps us all composed and keeps us together.

“I realized I wasn’t doing exactly everything that I needed to be doing. Maybe not even on the court, but just as a team leader. I just feel like everybody rallied … we stuck together. That was our problem last year. When we saw a little bit of adversity, we didn’t keep our composure.”
