Huron man sentenced for crash that killed passenger
A Huron man will serve four years in prison for a drunk driving crash that killed his Painesville passenger. Lake County Common Pleas Court Judge Vincent A. Culotta handed down the sentence to 60-year-old Robert McGann Dec. 10. McGann’s license will also be suspended for 10 years.
In November, McGann pleaded guilty to second-degree felony aggravated vehicular homicide that killed 57-year-old Michael P. Corrigan on Sept. 24, 2017.
According to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, the crash occurred when McGann was driving his 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee on Route 2 toward Route 44. As the vehicle exited Route 2 east, the SUV traveled off the left side of the offramp briefly before re-entering the ramp and crossing the right shoulder of the ramp.
Corrigan, the lone passenger, was ejected from the vehicle as it overturned and was thrown about 30 to 35 feet.
Both men were transported to TriPoint Medical Center in Concord Township. McGann was subsequently taken to MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland. The Sheriff’s Office said Corrigan was pronounced dead at TriPoint.
A blood draw showed that McGann’s blood alcohol content was above the legal limit.
McGann was secretly indicted by the Lake County Grand Jury in April. An arraignment hearing was held in the common pleas court Sept. 14.
He was indicted on two counts of second-degree felony aggravated vehicular homicide, two misdemeanor OVI counts and one misdemeanor count of operating a vehicle while under the influence of a controlled substance or a listed metabolite of a controlled substance.
McGann pleaded to one of the aggravated vehicular homicide charges. The other counts in the indictment are being waived.
He faced a maximum of 8 years in prison.
