Crop comments: Elyria Catholic keeps the top spot with impressive early wins, but hasn’t played since Dec. 5. The Panthers look to show that lengthy layoffs won’t hamper them . ... Olmsted Falls picked up wins against Avon Lake and Avon so far this season to show the Bulldogs want to remain at the top of the Southweste­rn Conference. A showdown with Westlake on Dec. 12 will do a lot to show the SWC pecking order . ... Westlake has been as advertised so far this season, with wins against Amherst, North Ridgeville and Berea-Midpark to sit at the top of the Southweste­rn Conference with No. 2 Olmsted Falls. A showdown Dec. 12 with the Bulldogs will determine who is No. 2 next week . ... The lack of consistenc­y displayed by Avon Lake last year appears to be a thing of the past. The Shoregals have an impressive win over Bay (No. 4 in the preseason Crop) on their resume, with the only blemish coming against No. 2 Olmsted Falls. ... Bay slides behind No. 4 Avon Lake, which happens to be the Rockets’ only blemish this year. Bay will show what it is made of as it enters the Great Lakes Conference slate this week . ... Lutheran West has had a rough start, but its two losses have come against top-notch teams in Great Lakes Conference hopeful Holy Name and Patriot Athletic Conference front-runner Buckeye. But if wins don’t start piling up, a slide is eminent . ... Wellington took a lopsided loss to Margaretta in its opener, but has been strong since. A showdown with Clearview on Dec. 15 will show just how good the Dukes can be this year . ... Lorain is undefeated and showed mettle in an overtime with against Bedford on Dec. 8. Those were the type of games the Titans would lose last year, meaning Lorain may be a sleeper team this season . ... North Ridgeville has not started the season with the easiest of schedules, but the Rangers have shown that they can be a great team when they put it all together . ... Clearview took an early loss to No. 6 Lutheran West and is better than its 2-2 record shows.
