Rockets jump to early lead, top Titans

Both Lorain and Bay have young teams, but the Rockets are making strides while the Titans continue searching for answers.

Led by Haley Andrejcak’s 16 points, Bay cruised to a 55-31 home victory on Jan. 12.

The Rockets (9-3) looked more like a veteran team.

“We were a little more disciplined,” Bay coach John Curran said.

Curran said the game was about trying something different on offense, and it worked early.

The Rockets jumped to a 10-0 lead and didn’t allow a Titans basket until 1:26 in the first quarter.

After taking a 22-12 halftime lead, Lorain turned the tables in the third quarter, and cut the deficit to 25-19.

Lorain stopped Bay on five straight possessions, but again, the Rockets found an answer going on a 13-4 run to close the quarter.

The Titans (6-6) never threatened in the fourth.

“We struggled to make shots and we’re a young team,” Lorain coach Mark Feldmann said. “Nothing we did was because of a lack of effort. Bay knocked down shots, and we didn’t.”

Feldmann is searching to see some consistency in the Titans, who have dropped five of their past six.

“At the beginning of the season, we knew we were going to play a bunch of young kids,” Feldmann added. “Before the season starts, you’re always excited about those young kids because you know you’ll have them for four years. But when the games start and they make mistakes,

it’s not as exciting anymore (laughs). But we’re trying to stay patient and understand that they will grow up.”

Madelynn Edgerly added 14 points and nine rebounds, and Bay made 4 of 20 3-pointers.

It hasn’t always been easy for Bay to understand taking quality shots, and Curran expects they continue to show they can.

“I think the team is starting to understand it a little bit more,” he said. “Sometimes you have to take a bad shot to understand why it’s a bad shot. We didn’t set our feet on our 3-point attempts today, but I think we’re getting better. I thought Haley was great and we challenged her to be a leader in the locker room and on the floor and she’s starting to respond.”
