Westlake gymnast wins two events at sectional

Westlake gymnast Haley Brennan had a solid start to the postseason at the West Geauga Sectional. The senior won the bars and the floor exercise en route to a secondplac­e finish in the all-around.

Westlake gymnast Haley Brennan had a solid start to the postseason on Feb. 16 at the West Geauga Sectional meet. The senior won the bars and the floor exercise en route to a second-place finish in the all-around, which was won by Brunswick’s Jordyn Thomas. Brennan scored a 9.225 on the floor, and an 8.925 on the bar. In the allaround, Brennan (35.350) was second to Brunswick’s Thomas, who was first with a score of 36.450. The top four teams, and top 12 individual­ly in each exercise advanced to next week’s West Geauga District. Olmsted Falls (second, 137.800) and Westlake (fourth, 133.650) earned district spots in the team competitio­n. Brunswick was the sectional team champion. Other area district qualifiers include:

• Fairview’s Olivia Zappe, who was third in the allaround (35.125).

• The Olmsted Falls’ junior trio of Colleen Thiel (34.750), Mara Deselich (34.675) and Taylor Schuette (34.475), who were fifth through seventh in the allaround. Deselich, who was the runner-up on floor with a score of 9.075.

• North Olmsted’s Naomi Goldman (beam) and Shannon Winchester (bars); and Westlake’s Eliza Steinman (floor, beam).
