Keystone High School girls Coach Scott Terry says he retires at the end of the season to focus on family.

“Watching that whole ‘circle of life’ play out has given me a great sense of pride for the hundreds of players that have become a part of my life.” Scott Terry, Keystone basketball coach

After 21 years of leading the Keystone girls basketball program, Coach Scott Terry announced he will be retiring at the end of this season to focus on family. Boasting a 337-142 career record headed into a Feb. 20 sectional matchup against Columbia while leading the purple and silver, Terry elevated the Keystone program to the next level with district titles in 2001, ’02, and ’11 while collecting 12 league titles. In an email with Terry, he stated that his growing family and granddaughters and grandsons played a big role in his final decision on making the call at the end of this season.

“To be able to free up time to spend with family,” Terry said. “I have a grandson (fourth grade) and a granddaughter (second grade) who played organized basketball this winter and I felt like I missed out not being able to be there. I also have two other younger granddaughters and another grandson and granddaughter (twins) coming in June.” As a man who has made an impact on so many lives over the course of his 26 years involved in coaching at Keystone, at the end of the day Terry said it’s all about the success of his players off the court that he has the most pride.

Seeing off hundreds of student athletes as they grow and become women, Terry believes the most important accomplishment of his career doesn’t come in a win or a trophy, but the lives he’s been a part of along the way. “I think just knowing that I had the opportunity to be a small part of a lot of players lives,” Terry said. “Watching them mature through high school and then witnessing them become great individuals as they became successful adults, and many have become great parents. Watching that whole ‘circle of life’ play out has given me a great sense of pride for the hundreds of players that have become a part of my life.”
