At the Brookside Invitational, the Midview boys made program history winning its first invitational in at least 17 years, according to head coach Kevin Radigan. The Middies scored 103 points beating Vermilion (80). Edwin Ralat won meet MVP honors winning the 400 (51.47 seconds) along with the 4x200 (1:32.37) and 4x100 (44.08, meet record) and was fourth on the 4x400 relay (3:41.84). Johnson won the 200m (22.84) and was a member of the winning 4x200 (1:32.37) and 4x100 relay (44.08) breaking a meet record. “It’s probably the most team points we’ve had at Midview,” Johnson said. “It’s a team effort and not just an individual. We’ve built this program up the last couple years, and I give all the credit to Coach Radigan and our coaching staff. My sophomore year when I first came out to track we were like this is a program we have to build. We build it brick by brick and that’s all we’re trying to do here.” Jacob Austin won the 110 hurdles (16.06). Radigan has built the program up to where the Middies compete for invitational titles. “We’re trying to build a program, and these guys are the ones that have built it,” Radigan said. “We have completely rebuilt the program and it’s because they’ve bought in.” The Avon girls showed its depth winning the title (151) over Midview (80).

The Eagles’ 4x800 relay were winners (10:26.51) along with the 4x200 (1:51.30), 4x100 relay (51.93) with a meet record and the 4x400 relay (4:17.55). Juliete Goodelle also won the 300 hurdles (48.41), Kelsey Gannon the 800 (2:32.04) and Meghan Waters won the high jump (5-0). “We had a pretty impressive night,” head coach Sam Ulery said. “We put in a few young girls and wanted to give them a try on the big meet stage. Your depth is usually the key to track. We’ve been blessed the last two to three years to have that and getting these young girls experience at a meet like this is great.” A pair of Sailors powered the way for Vermilion, with freshman Marianna Plas winning meet MVP. Plas won the 100 (13.42), 200 (27.36), was second in the 400 (1:03.29) and was fourth on the 4x400 relay (4:31.44). “It was hard to get through the races but my coaches encouraged me,” Plas said. “I’ve pushed myself. It means a lot to win MVP.” Vermilion senior Macy Urig tied her own meet record in the pole vault (100). Despite the win, Urig wasn’t totally satisfied. “Not a lot was working today, especially with the wind,” she said. “But I’m going to keep on going.” Urig is a returning state placer, taking sixth last June in Division II. She is coming off breaking the school record on April 16, vaulting 11 feet, 7 inches. “It was really nice,” Urig added. “I cleared 11-7 by a good amount so I was really excited to start. I then went to 12-1 and I had the height, but not the depth. I know it’s coming really soon. When everything works, it’s a good feeling.” Brookside junior Lauren Sheehan was crowned in both throw events, winning the shot put (37-0) and discus (103-3). Teammate Ellexis Tracy finished second in both the shot (34-10) and discus (103-0). Sheehan’s goal is to hit 42 feet in the shot and 120 feet in the discus. Her PR in the shot is a 38-9 and a 108 for disc. Winning at her own invite meant a lot to her. “It makes me really happy because last year I don’t even know what place I came in,” Sheehan said. “This year during practice my teammates have helped me prepare for this meet because it’s a pretty big meet. I was nervous because of the wind but it wasn’t too bad.”
