Athletics agree to deal with slugger Davis

Athletics slugger Khris Davis has gotten the long-term deal he wanted. The Athletics said April 18 they had agreed to terms with Davis on a contract the will keep him with the team through the 2021 season. The new deal covering 2020-21 adds $33.75 million, which brings him to $50.25 million over three years, a person familiar with the agreement told The Associated Press. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because terms of the deal had not been announced. Davis hit a majorsbest 48 home runs last season while setting a career high with 123 RBI. He is leading the majors again with 10 home runs so far this season. He is batting .260 with 20 RBI.

EMBIID MISSES GAME 3 >> Joel Embiid did not playing for the Philadelph­ia 76ers on April 18 in Game 3 against the Brooklyn Nets because of a sore left knee. Embiid warmed up before the game but the 76ers announced shortly before the start that the All-Star center wouldn’t be available. Greg Monroe was listed as their starter. Embiid was troubled by the knee late in the regular season and was listed as doubtful for Game 1 of the series. But he played in both games in Philadelph­ia, collecting a pair of double-doubles. The series was tied 1-1 before Game 3.

COUGHLIN CRITICAL OF RAMSEY, SMITH >> Tom Coughlin took a notso-subtle shot at two of Jacksonvil­le’s top defenders, cornerback Jalen Ramsey and linebacker Telvin Smith, for skipping voluntary workouts. The team’s executive vice president of football operations said April 18 that “championsh­ip teams are dominated by selfless individual­s who recognize that the welfare of the team must always be paramount to any other considerat­ion.” Ramsey and Smith are the team’s only players who didn’t show up for the start of the team’s offseason program. Coach Doug Marrone said he reached out to both players and didn’t hear back from either one.
