The city of Vermilion’s Third Thursday is scheduled to begin its new season starting May 16 through September.

Running from 6:30 p.m. to sunset May 16, June 20, July 18, Aug. 15 and Sept. 19, the free event will bring anywhere between 20 and 35 different live musical acts, all of which donate their time to perform in Vermilion’s streets.

“The streets are packed,” said Barb Brady, organizer of the event since its inception about 13 years ago.

Brady said the first year of the event featured five bands and has grown considerably since.

“It’s geared toward downtown merchants and bands,” she said.

Music genres range widely and include rock and roll, soul, pop, folk, country, Christian and acoustic.

For the May 16 event, about 30 bands and a karaoke station will perform along Liberty Avenue, Main Street and state Route 60 in downtown Vermilion.

“You can go to a lot of venues and listen to a band, but in Vermilion on Third Thursday, you can stand in the street and hear five different bands at the same time,” Brady said.

Although May usually is a slower time for the event, once the warmer summer months arrive, as many as a few thousand people come to downtown Vermilion, she said.

Brady said she began reaching out to bands six weeks ago, but waits to finalize the lineup until the weekend before the Third

There is no funding needed for the event since it is entirely run by volunteers, she said.
