Raiders claim ex-Brown Kizer

-

The Oakland Raiders have claimed quarterback DeShone Kizer off waivers from the Green Bay Packers.

The move made Sept. 1 gives Oakland four quarterbacks for the time being with Kizer joining starter Derek Carr and backups Mike Glennon and Nathan Peterman.

Kizer was originally a second-round pick by Cleveland in 2017 and then was traded to Green Bay in 2018. Kizer has played 18 games, completing 53% of his passes with 24 interceptions and 11 TD passes for a 58.9 passer rating.

The Raiders released defensive end Josh Mauro to make room for Kizer on the roster.

GORDON TALKS AT STANDSTILL >> The Chargers do not intend to extend running back Melvin Gordon’s contract until after the season.

General manager Tom Telesco said during a conference call on Sept. 1 that the team has suspended contract talks with the regular season one week away. Gordon is on the team’s did not report list after holding out during training camp and the preseason.

“We have to get focused on the season and our next opponent,” Telesco said.

The Chargers host Indianapolis in the Sept. 8 season opener.

Gordon — who would be going into his fifth season — has gained over 1,200 yards from scrimmage and scored 10 or more touchdowns in three straight seasons.

POWER WINS AT PORTLAND >> Will Power has won at Portland International Raceway in a strong day for Team Penske, as Josef Newgarden slightly tightened his grip on the IndyCar championship.

Newgarden started the Sept. 1 race with a 38-point lead in the standings and had a trouble-free drive around the road course to finish fifth. Although it was two spots behind challenger Alexander Rossi, who finished third, Newgarden goes to the season finale at Laguna Seca with a 41-point lead over Rossi.

Newgarden is seeking his second title in three years.

His push might have been clouded if fivetime and reigning series champion Scott Dixon did not lose power on pit lane. Dixon had command of the race when his car powered down during a routine stop. His crew had to push him to his stall and replace the battery, and Dixon went from leader to three laps off the pace in a moment. His title hopes — he was fourth among the four drivers mathematically eligible to win the championship — dashed.

FRAZIER CALLED UP BY YANKEES >> Clint Frazier is back in the Bronx, and he’s hoping to pick up where he left off — in the batter’s box, at least.

The Yankees recalled the brazen young outfielder from Triple-A, more than two months after sending him down amid a roster crunch.

Frazier’s call-up comes as rosters expand for September. The 24-yearold hit .283 with 11 homers and an .843 OPS in 53 games with New York this season, becoming a fan favorite for his powerful swing and flashy, custom-made footwear — he had pictures of his mom’s cats painted onto a set of spikes for Mother’s Day.
