Hawthorne Elementary School teacher remembered

- Staff report

Lorain City Schools announced the passing of longtime educator Carmen Gallo.

Gallo, who began her career with Lorain Schools in 2000, first taught at Meister Road Elementary School, before spending time in classrooms at both Frank Jacinto and Irving elementary schools, in a news release from Lorain Schools.

Most recently, she invested her time educating fourth-grade students at Hawthorne Elementary School.

An avid runner and attendee of her children Franco, Dominic and Vincenzo’s events, Gallo was a longtime volunteer for Special Olympics and CYO.

Gallo also was a fan of the University of Michigan Wolverines.

Hawthorne Principal Stephanie Alexander-Johnson said every student and staff member continues to keep Gallo and her extended family in their thoughts and prayers.

“Words are never adequate in moments like these,” Alexander-Johnson said. “We will say though, that our hearts go out to you, and we will always remember the joyous memories that we are privileged to have in knowing Carmen.”

Stevan Dohanos Principal Marie Deshuk used the words, “dedication” and “tradition” to describe her longtime friend.

Deshuk noted Gallo was dedicated to her family, friends and work.

As for her work, Deshuk said Gallo passionately gave to her work family and the children she taught.

Those who were friends with Gallo, experienced a bound of love and support, during their times together.

“We teased her often for her love for the team up north — aka University of Michigan — but she wore her blue and gold proudly,” Deshuk said. “For the love of Carmen, we do say this one time, Go Blue.”

Hawthorne Elementary School will close its doors Oct. 10, in observance of the prayer service at 9:30 a.m. at Bogner Family Funeral Home, 36625 Center Ridge Road, North Ridgeville.

A mass of Christian burial will immediately follow at 10 a.m. at St. Peter Church, 35777 Center Ridge Road, North Ridgeville.

Family also will receive friends from 5-8 p.m., Oct. 9, at Bogner Family Funeral Home.

In remembrance of Gallo, those seeking to make a monetary contribution are asked to do so to the Special Olympics organization by visiting www.specialolympics.org.

Those attending the receiving of friends and/or the prayer service are asked to wear the University of Michigan colors of maize and blue.
