Team being cautious with Williams, Ward
Browns starting cornerbacks Denzel Ward, right, and Greedy Williams returned to practice after missing three games with hamstring injuries. Jeff Schudel has the story from Berea.
Injured cornerbacks Denzel Ward and Greedy Williams returned to practice for the Browns on Oct. 9, but both are likely to miss a fourth straight game with hamstring injuries.
Ward and Williams plus rookie safety Sheldrick Redwine were injured the Thursday before the Browns played the Rams on Sept. 29. None has played since.
Williams was happy to be back at practice but did not sound optimistic about playing against the Seahawks on Oct. 13 at FirstEnergy Stadium.
“We’re still in debate,” Williams said. “Just depends on how it feels after I settle down off of it. Just depends on how it feels throughout the week. I’m just telling the docs, telling the trainers how I feel and based on what they think and how I feel, that’s going to monitor if I’m ready or not.”
TJ Carrie and Terrance Mitchell have started at cornerback with Ward and Williams sidelined. The Browns have given up six touchdown passes in the last three games.
“The guys who have come in have played exceptionally well,” head coach Freddie Kitchens said. “We had some issues the other night that we’re going to get corrected. They played good in spurts the other day, but they’ve played well up to this point.”
In other injury news, backup tackle Kendall Lamm returned to practice on a limited basis after missing three games with a knee injury.
The Browns played the last three games without a tackle behind Greg Robinson or Chris Hubbard. Justin McCray played right tackle against the Titans after Greg Robinson was ejected and Lamm was injured, but McCray’s natural position is guard.
