For leprechauns strolling through Lorain County, there may be gold at the end of rainbows this March.

Or, the search for that loot may send them tumbling down a trap.

Youngsters were able to make their very own leprechaun traps before St. Patrick’s Day during an event March 1 at Wittle Town, a playroom at 5296 Detroit Road in Sheffield Village.

Wittle Town owner Heidi King taught a handful of children how to make their traps, consisting of a base, tube, a ladder made of pipe cleaners, cupcake foils and plenty of gold and rainbows to lure leprechauns.

“When he (the leprechaun) sees the gold coin, he’s going to climb the ladder to go get the coin,” King said. “When he steps down, he will fall down the tube and now he’s trapped.”

She said the playroom organizes a variety of events for children from eight months to five years old and is now integrating more weekend events into the schedule.

“We do crafts more in the week, but we’re introducing crafts over the weekend, too, for working parents,” King said.

These events help with fine motor skills and keep children engaged with hands-on activities, she said.

For some who attended the event, St. Patrick’s Day heritage is already familiar through family.

Niamh Campbell, 3, of Westpark has grandparents from Ireland, but has yet to take a trip across the pond.

She said she hopes to catch a leprechaun with her trap and would keep his pot of gold all to herself.

Niamh’s mother Grace Campbell, 49, said she found the event by browsing the internet and would return to Wittle Town with her daughter.

“I’ve never been here before,” Campbell said. “It’s a really cute place.”
