Eleven new cases of novel coronavirus were confirmed April 13 in Lorain County, according to the most recent statistics from Lorain County Public Health.

The numbers bring Lorain County cases up to 186 along with eight deaths as Ohio numbers continue to rise.

According to the data, individuals with confirmed positive tests range between the ages of 22 and 96.

Lorain County Health added 328 people have been quarantined, 135 are being actively monitored and 193 were released from quarantine.

On April 10 Avon Lake Mayor Greg Zilka reported two additional cases, bringing the city’s total up to 41. One individual, a 49-yearold male is recovering at home.

The second individual was a resident at the city Main Street Care facility, where 17 people were reported to have tested positive as of April 9, bringing the total there to 18.

According to Ohio Department of Health Director Dr. Amy Acton, Ohio has 6,975 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 274 deaths and 2,033 hospitalizations.

Acton said five-day trends across the state have been holding fairly steady, however, they are continuing to see problems in congregate settings such as prisons and nursing homes.

“We know this virus is very contagious, very deadly and it spreads quickly when people are in those settings,” Acton said.

She added officials have known all along these facilities would be a problem in stopping the spread.

Acton signed an order requiring nursing homes to notify residents and families within 24 hours of a resident or staff member becoming infected.

The state of Ohio will also provide a list of facilities where positive tests have occurred.

“We know these will be our hotspots and as we move forward in the months to come these are areas we have to keep close tabs on,” Acton added.

She called staff in these settings ‘heroes’ who work tirelessly day and night. She said the Ohio Department of Health wants to do everything it can to protect them.
