Road improvements approved by council
Elyria will see a few more road improvements this summer as several projects are lined up to begin shortly.
At the virtual City Council meeting May 4, Council members approved nearly a $1 million resurfacing project on West River Road from Infirmary Road to Third Street.
The resurfacing project will connect with another street repaving project Council approved, which consists of improvements of West River Road from Third Street to Filbert Street.
City Engineer John Schneider said at a recent Utilities Committee meeting the project was approved by Ohio Public Works.
Schneider said the projects technically are two separate projects.
“About two years ago, we sent applications to Ohio Public Works for the application and they were approved late last year,” Schneider said.
“It’s a typical resurfacing. “It’s definitely needed.” Overall, 89 percent of the project will be covered by grants and $44,000 will come from the motor vehicle funds.
St. Mary’s Way also will get road improvements this summer.
Schneider said the project came from the new library being built, but also is part of the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency requirements.
A water line will be replaced on East Avenue and a few storm sewers will be extended on St. Mary’s Way, he said.
There also will be separate storm and sanitary sewers on St. Mary’s Way.
“Ultimately, this will help improve the entire area as far as the water, storm and sanitary, and it will satisfy some EPA requirements in the future, so we’re doing those early as part of this,” Schneider said.
“It’s a very good project the city really needs to move forward with.”
In total, the project is not to exceed $950,000.
Funds will come from the sanitation fund, stormwater fund and water fund.
