Peaceful protest planned in city
Avon city officials have released a letter denouncing the death of George Floyd, with a local organization planning a peaceful protest for June 6.
In a letter from Mayor Bryan Jensen, Public Safety Director Duane Streator and police Chief Richard Bosley, the right to free speech was supported.
“Our nation is experiencing a national crisis of civil unrest,” the letter said. “This unrest was brought on by the death of George Floyd.
“A cornerstone of our democracy is the right to free speech. As uncomfortable as it may be, our country believes this is a sacred right of our citizens and it must be protected.”
The Change We Seek, which is comprised of Avon High School graduates, is organizing the protest.
“This peaceful protest is designed to bring attention to racism and the inequalities of the criminal justice system,” the letter said.
This peaceful protest will take place from 2-5 p.m., on the corner of state Route 83 and Detroit Road.
“The Mayor’s Office along with the Avon Police Department stand with individuals who wish to peacefully protest against those who use unnecessary force against any citizen,” the letter said.
“We support the right of free speech.
“We also support our community and businesses and do not condone violence or destruction of property. The Change We Seek and the Avon Police Department share the same goal for Saturday and want it to serve as a catalyst for our community to promote diversity and equality of all of our citizens.”
