A new holiday ornament will mark the rejuvenation of Broadway in downtown Lorain.

On Sept. 14, Main Street Lorain’s board of directors unveiled the 2020 City of Lorain Holiday Ornament, a showpiece that will adorn Christmas trees and homes this winter.

Sales of the ornament will benefit the organization, which is dedicated to promoting downtown businesses.

“The Main Street Lorain Board was looking for a way to raise funds for all the great things we are planning for 2021,” said Kurt Hernon, Main Street president and owner of Speak of the Devil cocktail lounge. “This ornament not only does that, but it also instills a sense of pride and excitement about the revitalization of our downtown area.”

Hernon credited Pat Morrisson, founder of Footprint Tours, for suggesting the idea.

Morrisson said she was inspired by Main Street Medina, which earlier this year began advertising its annual holiday ornament.

Hernon and Morrission tracked down Beacon Design, the Lincoln, R.I.based company that specializes in “the finest ornaments made in the U.S.A.,” including those made for Main Street Medina.

Hernonsnappedaphotoof the arch that was added with new lights, sidewalks and signage in the city’s Broadway streetscape project.

Once it got to Beacon Design, the result was even better than expected, he said.

“We were really, quite frankly, blown away at the level of detail in it,” Hernon said. “It looks so fabulous.

“We figured, here’s a great opportunity to fund raise and get something out that everyone in Lorain can be proud of.”

Ornaments are only available via pre-order.

“This is more than just a holiday ornament,” says Jennifer Black, chairwoman of the Main Street Lorain Promotions Committee. “I think some people will want to have this on display in their office all year or to send as a memento to a friend that has moved out of town or a loved one that is deployed or away at school.

“It is really special.”
