Business renews furniture usefulness
Family shop specializes in repurposed items
An Amherst Township business has become the place for people looking to find unique decor for their home.
City Salvage & Design, 46145 Telegraph Road, has a little something for everyone.
“We’ve been in business since 2012,” said John Beckler, owner of the business. “My mother (Janice) and father (Doug) started this business with my sister Amy (Cseh) and they had their first location in Grand River out in Lake County.
“About a year, year and half later, they started with this one and they opened up this location here in 2014. So, we’ve been in business for almost 10 years now.”
Beckler said architecture repurposing is a big part of the business.
“We do a lot of different stuff,” he said. “We do architectural salvage. The types of things that would be architectural pieces on the outside of the home.
“We also do painted furniture. Some people have old furniture they want painted and they bring it to us. We also find furniture at different sales and things that we will refurbish and sell.”
Unique items
Beckler said unique items are the foundation of the business.
“We do vintage home decor and new home decor,” he said. “The real goal for us is to find and make unique things for people’s homes.
“They can find things here that they might not be able to find elsewhere. Things that you may not necessarily think would be used for home decor, folks are now starting to use and repurpose.
“There are all kinds of aspects to vintage. There are different time periods that people are looking for with certain items, and we are able to help folks find that thing that is very specific and unique.”
Beckler said City Salvage doesn’t limit itself on what can be made and repurposed.
“We just got some old orchard ladders and some people use them for blanket ladders, or I’m pairing a couple of them together to make a shelving unit,” he said. “So, people might take different items and repurpose them to make some other things.
“We’ll go to estate sales, private residents, and really anywhere to find what we’re looking for. We also have people bring us stuff. We take a look at what people have.
“They want to clean some space out in their home, and we are happy to help them do that.”
Beckler said the business also does some restoration.
“It depends on how much damage is done and how much a customer wants to put into it to get it back to the way it was,” he said. “We work within their budget.
“We have a large workshop in the back. All of our work is done here on site.”
Beckler said the business also offers a unique retail experience.
“We have a lot of the furniture displayed out here for purchase, but we also have shelves of do-it-yourself paints,” he said. “It is a wide range of the paints to give furniture that refurbished look.
“We also have some wood carved signs we’ve started selling as well. We have a lot premade and we also take specific orders for what the client wants them to say.
“If people are interested in the type of home decor we have, they should stop by because we have unique items that they might not be able to buy elsewhere, and we offer them at a very reasonable price.”
