A portion of Cooper Foster Park Road in Amherst will close temporarily due to a sewer line installation for the new Akron Children’s Hospital.

Signs are posted on North Main Street and North Lake Street announcing the closure, according to a news release.

Mayor Mark Costilow said that the road closure is anticipated to start Jan. 25, but depends on the weather.

“Everything this time of year is weather-dependent ... it’s not necessarily weather-dependent then, but also dependent on the weather from now until then,” Costilow said.

The closure only will take up the portion of road where the new hospital will go at the southeast corner of Cooper Foster and Hollstein Drive.

Costilow said the road must be closed to all through traffic for about a week because the sewer line for the hospital will attach to the city’s main line, which is located across the street from the construction site.

“This should be the only road closure,” he said.

Motorists can access Hollstein Drive from North Lake Street, the release said.

Residents coming out of Hollstein Drive will have to turn west.

Access to the residences on the east side of the construction site will be from North Main Street, according to the release.

The residents to the east of the bend where Akron Children’s is being constructed will have to go east.

Costilow said crews will post signs for residents to know exactly when this actually will occur.

As for next steps for the hospital construction, Costilow said the rest is up to the construction company and engineers working on the project.

“They’ll be prepping the ground and build whatever design they have,” he said.
