Schools evacuated after bomb threat

- Staff report

The Lorain County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a bomb threat March 8 at Clearview High School, 4700 Broadway in Sheffield Township.

Sheriff’s deputies received a call at 9:59 a.m. for threats made against the building, according to a news release.

A Clearview Local Schools resource officer was advised by a middle school student that he had received a bomb threat via social media against Clearview High the night of March 7, the release said.

Due to the nature of the threat and as a precaution, both Clearview High and Durling Middle School, 100 North Ridge Road, were evacuated, according to the release.

A protective sweep and search of both buildings was conducted, the release said.

No threat was located and both buildings were deemed safe, according to the release.

Students and staff were allowed to return without further incident.

No one was injured during the evacuations, the release said.

The district’s Board of Education further discussed the incident during a board meeting later that afternoon.

Superintendent Jerome Davis said the evacuation of both buildings went smoothly.

“Both buildings were very calm, cool,” he said during the meeting.

Board member Heidi Adkins said parents later expressed concerns to the district about the number of feet required for students and staff to stand away from the targeted building.

Davis said there is not a set number of feet that is required under the district’s safety plan.

Instead, both schools are required to evacuate into the district’s football field for safety.

“What’s happened in the past, we’ve had one building or the other, we’ve never had both buildings at the same time,” Davis said. “They both went to the football field and went to the far end.”

He said the district worked with six or seven law enforcement officers on the scene.

There are no suspects, and this matter is under investigation, the release said.
