Baseball league recruits youth
The International City Baseball youth league is continuing a registration process with events scattered around Lorain.
Within the first hour or so during a March 13 registration event at Game On Lorain, 301 Broadway Ave. in Lorain, league treasurer and Lorain City Councilman-atlarge Mitch Fallis said the club already had a few people registered.
He said of the four registration events held by International City Baseball, the two that have been held at the bar thus far have been the most popular, with somewhere between half a dozen and a dozen registrations being booked during the events.
The league is looking to expand its playing field from Campana Park, 2840 Meister Road in Lorain, to other teams located in Amherst, Sheffield Village, Sheffield Lake and Vermilion, he said.
“The whole concept is instead of us having four teams in a league, maybe we’ll have eight teams in a league,” Fallis said. “We’ll play home and away and we won’t play the same teams over and over.
“It’ll be fun,” he said. “The kids will be able to travel a little bit and play at different parks.”
Pedro Natal, vice president of International City Baseball, said planned improvements for restrooms, dugouts and concession stands are planned once the weather commits to staying warm.
He said a community clean-up event started a painting project for the concession stand and dugouts, as well as looking into hand sanitizer containers for dugouts.
Dugouts and bleachers will also be sanitized in between games, according to Natal.
Other facility updates include new lighting, flooring and touchless soap dispensers and paper towel dispensers, among others, according to Fallis.
The league is planning for concession stands to run the gambit as far as food and refreshment options, Natal said.
“Right now we’re trying to get more detail, but we will serve popcorn, hot dogs, Gatorades, all the basics,” he said.
Registration for the league will run until somewhere around late March or early April, depending on sign-ups.
