DAR Good Citizen Award and Scholarship awarded to Elyria High School senior
The Nathan Perry Chapter National Society Daughters of the American Revolution of Lorain County has announced that Elyria High School senior Parker Skutt is its 2021 DAR Good Citizen Award and Scholarship Contest winner,
Skutt is not only the winner of the Nathan Perry Chapter, NSDAR winner, but also the Northeast District Ohio winner.
The DAR Good Citizens Award and Scholarship Contest, created in 1934, is intended to encourage and reward the qualities of good citizenship.
Nathan Perry, NSDAR has been participating in the DAR Good Citizen Award since 1934. It sends applications to all 16 school districts in Lorain County. Each school may select one outstanding high school senior who exhibits the qualities of service, leadership, dependability, and patriotism to be its school’s Good Citizen.
That student may then participate in the scholarship portion of the contest, which includes an essay that is presented with the topic in a sealed envelope to each participant who has 2 hours to complete their essay without the use of any resources.
Three judges, unrelated to DAR, were selected to read the essays.
This year, there was no need for a discussion as all three named Skutt as the winner.
Skutt is highly active at her school by participating in its orchestra (violin), choir, cross-country, French, Key Club, Leo, and Yoga clubs. She is co-editor of the Herald newspaper and works on the yearbook staff. She is currently president of student council and a member of National Honor Society.
Skutt has organized food drives and is a volunteer at Prospect Arts Academy.
She will pursue a bachelor’s degree in history and political science and aspires to become an elected official.
