First look at Wilhelm Award nominees

With the beginning of the high school football season, comes an early Wilhelm award watch list, lead by running back’s Tommy Bebie of Rocky River and Marco Cirigliano of Columbia.

The Matt Wilhelm Award goes to The Morning Journal’s football player of the year.

A watch list for the top players in the area will be published each week leading up to the presentati­on of the Award.

This list is fluid and can change week to week. This list is in alphabetic­al order:

• RB Tommy Bebie, Sr., Rocky River: In a Week 1 win over Midview, rushed for 153 yards and three touchdowns on ten carries. Also caught three passes for 53 yards and had a team-high ten tackles and a sack on defense.

• RB Marco Cirigliano, So., Columbia: In a Week 1 win over Independen­ce rushed for 307 yards on 23 carries good enough for a 13.3 ypc average. Scored four touchdowns all in the first half, also added a catch for 14 yards and a tackle on defense.

• QB Jeremy Dzik, Jr., Avon Lake: In a Week 1 win over Strongsvil­le completed 24of his 36passes for 241yards and two touchdowns.

• RB Gavin Ehrhardt, Jr., Avon: In a Week 1 win over Brunswick totaled 130 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Also starred on defense in a shutout victory from his middle linebacker position.

• RB Lance Glover Jr., Jr., Elyria: In a Week 1 win over Elyria Catholic had 105 yards on the ground with two touchdowns. Those two scores came in the fourth quarter and put the Pioneers in the lead.

• ATH Kenny Grobolsek, Sr., Brookside: In a Week 1 win over Wickliffe accounted for four touchdowns. On offense scored three rushing touchdowns on 44 yards rushing while adding 16tackles and a strip-sack on defense. The strip-sack happened in the end zone, leading to a touchdown.

• RB Gideon Lampron, Sr., Keystone: In a Week 1 win over Northweste­rn had 17 tackles, three sacks and a forced fumble to clinch a victory. On offense totaled 89 yards on 17 touches.

• QB Ben Rini, Sr., Vermilion: In a Week 1 win over Margaretta totaled 96 yards on offense adding a 25-yard rushing touchdown. On defense had a team-high 19tackles in addition to a sack and two forced fumbles.

• QB Konner Rodick, Jr., Keystone: In a Week 1 win over Northweste­rn completed nearly 60-percent of his passes for 316yards and five touchdowns.

• WR Ryne Shackelfor­d, Jr., Keystone: In a Week 1win over Northweste­rn, caught six passes for 105 yards and a touchdown. Added 14 yards and a touchdown on the ground.

• RB Torre Weatherspo­on, Sr., Amherst: In a Week 1loss to Valley Forge carried the ball 18times for 102 yards. Also added a catch for 72 yards and four tackles on defense.
