USA Gymnastics eyes settlement

USA Gymnastics could be near the final stages of the legal fallout of the Larry Nassar sexual abuse scandal.

The organization and hundreds of women who claim they were abused by the former national team doctor or others affiliated with the national governing body filed a joint $425 million settlement proposal in U.S. Bankruptcy Court that could put an end to years of litigation.

“After extensive discussions, this plan has been jointly proposed by USA Gymnastics and the Committee, and it is supported by many of the involved insurers,” USA Gymnastics said in a statement. “We anticipate that this plan will be confirmed later this year and greatly appreciate all parties’ efforts to get to this point.”

The proposal was put together by the USA Gymnastics and the Survivors Committee. It still needs to be approved by the survivors and any other creditors.

Hand was reinstated from the bereavement list and designated for assignment before a game against Baltimore. Hand went 0-2 with a 7.27 ERA in 11 games with Toronto after being acquired from Washington on July 29 in exchange for rookie catcher Riley Adams.

Hand last pitched in an Aug. 26 loss to the White Sox, allowing two runs and three hits in 2/3 of an inning. He was placed on the bereavement list July 27.

Hand went 5-5 with a 3.79 ERA and 21 saves in 41 appearances for Washington before the trade. He’s 43-31 with 126 saves and a 3.70 ERA over 11 big-league seasons.

ANOTHER RED SOX PLAYER POSITIVE FOR COVID >> Boston reliever Hirokazu Sawamura has become the latest Red Sox player to test positive for COVID-19.

Red Sox manager Alex Cora made the announcement before a game at Tampa Bay. The Boston bullpen has been hit hard by the outbreak.

Left-hander Martín Pérez and right-hander Matt Barnes were added to the COVID-19 injured list before Aug. 30’s 6-1 loss to the Rays. It was announced afterward that reliever Josh Taylor and first base coach Tom Goodwin were in quarantine as close contacts, and quality control coach Ramón Vázquez had tested positive.
