9/11 remembrance events planned
Several Lorain County communities will host remembrance ceremonies in honor of the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
Amherst
At noon, Sept. 11, American Legion Post 118 and the city of Amherst will pay their respects of the 20th anniversary of the events of 9/11 with a ceremony at 921 N. Lake St.
Avon
The city of Avon will remember the events of 9/11 with its annual Patriot Day ceremony at 8:30 a.m., Sept. 11, at the Avon Veterans Memorial located behind the Avon Fire Department at 36185 Detroit Road.
Avon Lake
Avon Lake will mark the 20th anniversary of 9/11 with its Patriot Day ceremony at Veterans Memorial Park, 32770 Lake Road, from 2-6 p.m., Sept. 11. Patriot Cause, a nonprofit organization, will raise awareness for local first responders with an event featuring music and food vendors. Tickets are $20.
Elyria
The Lorain County Urban League guild will present its third annual Constitution Day from 9 a.m. to noon, Sept. 11, at the First United Methodist Church, 312 Third St. in Elyria.
Sponsors of the event include the Oberlin Area League of Women Voters.

The program will start with a tribute to the victims of the 9/11 terrorist attack.
Discussions that follow will include the first and 14th amendments.
Workshops will be followed by a presentation from the Ohio League of Women Voters on election rules updates and gerrymandering.
The public is invited.
The cost is $10 which includes a box lunch.
Lorain County Community College, 1005 Abbe Road, will hold a remembrance event in honor of the 20th anniversary of the terrorist attacks at 9:45 a.m., Sept. 10, on the lawn outside the Bass Library on the LCCC campus.
The brief event will include comments from LCCC President Marcia J. Ballinger, Ph.D., music by TrueNorth Cultural Arts, a moment of silence and the unveiling of a remembrance display located outside of the Bass Library. The event is open to the public.
“Our campus and community will come together to reflect, heal and to honor the memory of the innocent people who died that day,” Ballinger said.
The remembrance display will include an arrangement of flags in the shape of a star to represent the 2,977 individuals who tragically lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001.
An augmented reality feature is available via visitors’ smartphones and will project a semi-translucent image of the Twin Towers inside the display.
The remembrance display will be open to the public from, Sept. 10-17.
Lorain
The city of Lorain will host a first responders charity softball game and event starting at 12:30 p.m., Sept. 11, at the Pipeyard Stadium, 2840 Meister Road.
The Lorain Police Department and Lorain Fire Department will face off in softball with donations and proceeds benefiting the Lorain Valor Home, a transitional housing facility for male veterans in need.
The event will feature remarks from Lorain Mayor Jack Bradley, Lorain police Chief Jim McCann and Lorain fire Chief Chris Radman along with recruiters from all military branches.
North Ridgeville
North Ridgeville will host a 9/11 memorial service at 8:30 a.m., Sept. 11, for a ceremony with remarks from Mayor Kevin Corcoran and a performance by the North Ridgeville High School choir at Ranger Stadium, 34600 Bainbridge Road.
The event is being hosted by the city of North Ridgeville and North Ridgeville City School District.
North Ridgeville City Schools Superintendent Roxann Ramsey-Caserio will serve as the emcee and they will have a moment of silence at 8:46 a.m. marking the moment the first plane struck the World Trade Center and a poem read by former New York residents.
