A Lorain resident is actualizing his basketball dreams.

Sharod Brown, 25, graduated from Clearview High School in 2014 and from Ohio Business College as a medical assistant in 2017. Brown, who is the Brookside High School boys basketball varsity assistant and junior varsity head coach, has a passion to help assist and train younger athletes in fundamental basketball skills.

He said he always has had a heart for basketball.

“I began playing organized basketball in ninthgrade,” Brown said. “I’ve been playing since I was younger.”

He launched his own gym, Elevation Training Center, located at 6892 Lake Ave. in Elyria, in July 2019.

“We are a skill development gym,” he said. “I offer personal training and performance enhancement for all grade levels, beginning in kindergarten through college level athletes.

“We focus on all skill development for basketball to assist them in reaching the next level and attain any other goals they may personally set.”

Brown said his passion to help stems from not having consistent sports role models in his own youth.

“There’s really no resources in this area reaching back into the community,” he said. “I take pride in giving my time, service and knowledge for the game of basketball.

“I think it’s important to continue to pass on the knowledge that I have gained over the years.”

Brown recently began a position to impact youth sports in a fresh way, as the newest Brookside High boys assistant basketball coach..

“I’m definitely excited,” he said. “We have a good coaching staff and group of kids, so it will be a fresh and exciting year for our program.”

Brown said he is excited to bring his expertise to the Brookside Cardinals.

“I believe in my knowledge and expertise when it comes to the game of basketball,” he said. “I’ve been doing basketball development training for years, and I know what it takes to excel.”

The boys basketball season kicks off for Brookside on Nov. 11 with a scrimmage at Amherst High School.

On Sept. 25, Brown will hold a free basketball clinic for players age 8 to 12 at his facility.

“We try to do an annual clinic each season,” he said. “This will be our free fall clinic.”

Brown said he doesn’t charge for the clinics in order to reach athletes who may not be able to afford personal training.

“I want to help out athletes and families who may not be able to come on a regular basis to the gym,” he said. “It’s a good opportunity for everyone to get some training, have fun and get better.”
