Wilhelm award watch list continues

Despite losing to Avon Lake last week, Avon’s Sam DeTillio nearly orchestrat­ed a 20-point second-half comeback, as he continues to make a case for the player of the year award.

The Matt Wilhelm Award goes to The Morning Journal’s football player of the year.

A watch list for the top players in the area will be published each week leading up to the presentati­on of the Award.

This list is fluid and can change week to week. This list is in alphabetic­al order:

• RB Tommy Bebie, Sr., Rocky River: In a Week 4 loss to Lakewood, carried the ball 15times for 118 yards and a touchdown. Also caught four passes for 18 yards. Led the Pirates defense with 15 tackles including one for a loss.

• Jakorion Caffey, So., Avon: In a Week 4loss to Avon Lakecarrie­d the ball 14times for 115yards and a touchdown. Also caught a pair of passes for 72 yards and two scores.

• Andrew Champagne, Sr., Columbia: In a Week 4 win over Black River, completed 14of 18passes for 226yards and two scores. On the ground ran for three touchdowns and 79 yards on nine carries.

• RB Marco Cirigliano, So., Columbia: One of the area’s leading rushers, ran for 49 yards and a touchdown in a Week 4 win. Has 606 yards and nine touchdowns in four games.

• RB Rocco Conti, Jr., Olmsted Falls: Surpassed 100-total yards for the fourth time this year. In the Bulldogs’ Week 4 win over Midview had 119 total yards and a touchdown.

• Sam DeTillio, Jr., Avon: In a Week 4loss to Avon Lake, completed five of eight passes for 119yards and two touchdowns. Nearly orchestrat­ed a 20-point second half comeback.

• RB Levi Ellis, Jr., Elyria Catholic: Scored three times in a Week 4win over GLC foe Holy Name. Totaled 90 yards on the ground with 57 coming on the ground.

• RB Dom Farago, Sr., North Ridgeville: In a Week 4win over Amherst, ran for 132 yards and four touchdowns. Has helped North Ridgeville to its first three game win streak in six years.

• ATH Kenny Grobolsek, Sr., Brookside: In a Week 4 win over Clearview, scored three touchdowns on offense — two passing and one rushing. On defense tallied 15 tackles including three for a loss. Also forced and recovered a pair of fumbles.

• RB Gideon Lampron, Sr., Keystone: The 2020 Wilhelm Award winner. Carried the ball five times for 159 yards in a Week 4 win over Oberlin. Scored three times on his first three carries of the game.

• QB Kyle Ransom, Sr., Firelands: In a Week 4 win over Wellington, completed 14of 19passes for 126 yards. Ran the ball nine times for 39 yards and a score. Is the Falcons leading passer and rusher in 2021.

• QB Konner Rodick, Jr., Keystone: In a Week 4 win over Oberlin, ran for 114 yards and two scores. Also completed three of four passes for 44yards.

• WR Ryne Shackelfor­d, Jr., Keystone: In a Week 4 win over Oberlin, ran back the opening kickoff for a touchdown. In three games this year has 247 all purpose yards.

• WR Matthew Stuewe, Jr., Avon Lake: In a Week 4 win over Avon, caught five passes for 111yards and two touchdowns.

• RB Torre Weatherspo­on, Sr., Amherst: In a Week 4loss to North Ridgeville, ran for 59yards — his first sub-100yard performanc­e in 2021. Made impacts elsewhere with an intercepti­on and a 100 receiving yards. Is Amherst’s leading rusher and receiver through four games.
