The Ohio House of Representatives on Sept. 23 honored the life and service of Navy Corpsman Maxton Soviak whose life was recently taken in Afghanistan, according to a news release from state Rep. D.J. Swearingen.

Soviak, 22, was from Berlin Heights Ohio and served his country with pride and honor, said Swearingen, who is serving his first term in the Ohio House of Representatives; he represents the 89th House District, which encompasses both Erie and Ottawa counties.

Soviak died along with 12 other U.S. service members in the bomb attack Aug. 26 at Afghanistan’s Kabul airport during the airlift in the conflict’s final days.

He was an exemplary young man who was skilled and excelled in any activity he chose to take up, Swearingen said.

Whether football, boy scouts, wrestling or shooting competitions, he always was someone you wanted on your team, Swearingen said.

“Maxton was saving Afghan orphans who had been separated from their parents when he and his servicemen were killed in action by a suicide bomber,” he said. “A true soldier through and through the legacy and service of Maxton will never be forgotten.

“We always remember those lost fighting for our freedom and pray for Maxton’s family and loved ones during this most difficult time.”
