Mock crash warns for homecoming
The Ohio State Highway Patrol Norwalk Post, Huron County Sheriff’s Office, Norwalk Police Department, Norwalk Fire Department and North Central EMS partnered Sept. 23 with students from St. Paul High School, 9 E. Main St. in Norwalk, to put on a homecoming mock crash.
St. Paul students Jordan Fulton, Maddie Jaworski and Karlie Rudolph organized the event to raise awareness of the dangers of impaired driving and distracted driving, according to a news release from the Highway Patrol.
White’s Towing loaned two crashed vehicles for the event, setting the stage was for a mock crash on homecoming weekend.
The students used makeup and fake blood in an attempt to make the crash seem as real as possible.
Firefighters used hydraulic jaws to cut the door off a crashed vehicle to free a “trapped” passenger.
North Central EMS personnel treated two “injured” passengers and loaded them into the ambulance.
In the scenario, two students were killed.
The student who caused the crash was arrested for OVI and taken away in handcuffs.
Approximately 300 students stood silently in the parking lot watching as the scene unfolded.
Other students who participated in the scenario included Zach Pocos, Will Stieber and Josie Skinn.
From 2016-2021, there were 913 teen-related crashes in Huron County which resulted in five deaths.
Local first responders want to remind every driver to slow down, buckle up, drive sober, and don’t drive distracted.
