Lorain County Health & Dentistry to open

- Staff report The Middle Avenue health center is open MondayFriday and has weekly evening hours each Monday.

Lorain County Health & Dentistry will host an invitation-only ribbon-cutting event at 4 p.m., Oct. 6, to celebrate the opening of a new community health center at 801 Middle Ave. in Elyria.

According to a news release, Lorain County Health & Dentistry closed a leased health center at 412 E. River St. when operations were moved to the new building Aug. 20, and the new center opened for patient care.

Services are expanded at the new location and include general dentistry and behavioral health, in addition to prenatal, and primary medical care for per- sons of all ages, the release said.

Early next year, Lorain County Health & Dentistry will add on-site pharmacy and optometry services at the new location, the release related.

Lorain County Health & Dentistry will continue to operate a small Elyria health center at 105 Louden Court, in Wilkes Villa, working closely with Lorain Metropolitan Housing Authority, according to the release.

The Middle Avenue opening came after 19 months of planning and construction during the uncertainty of the novel coronavirus pandemic.

“We selected this location because the neighborhood is one of high need, and is in a federally designated Medically Underserved Area,” said Stephanie Wiersma, president and CEO of the Lorain County Health & Dentistry. “The location is very prominent in the city.

“We expect to serve many more Elyrians who want high quality and affordable primary care just as we deliver at our six other locations. Not even the pandemic could delay this worthy project.”

Todd Tilberg, chair of the Lorain County Health & Dentistry board of directors, expressed gratitude to project funders, including the Ohio General Assembly for $310,000 in State Capital Funds and The Nord Family Foundation for $150,000 to purchase dental equipment.

“We initiated this project just before the start of COVID-19,” Tilberg said. “Our community, and our funders, were counting on us to succeed despite the added challenges.

“We have operated in Elyria since 2013, and are committed to serving here for years to come. Our Middle Avenue site will make a big difference to those living nearby and who need us the most. We are so pleased to make this happen.”
