Avon rushing attack too much for Berea-Midpark

Eagles’ Caffey runs for six touchdowns in win

Avon’s Jakorion Caffey picked a great time to post a pair of breakout games. The Eagles’ sophomore running back one upped his Week 7 performance with five touchdowns in a 49-14 win for the Eagles.

Caffey — a week removed from a career high 195 rushing yards and four touchdowns — scored three times in the first half. The sophomore entered the game as the area’s fifth leading rusher and added 160 to his total against the Titans.

He finished with six total touchdowns — five rushing

and one receiving.

“To know you have someone back there that’s so talented next to you is special,” Avon quarterback Sam DeTillio said. “He’s so dynamic, he’s incredibly strong and then he can hit a hole and burst through it. He’s got speed and he can also give you the shimmy.”

Caffey’s first came from 50-yards out, putting Avon up 14-0 in the early second quarter. He scored on another long run to open the third quarter, breaking free for a 64-yard score.

The Eagles and Titans traded punts on the first four possessions of the game. On Berea-Midpark’s third punt, the snap was low and mishandled giving Avon the ball at the 25yard line.

A play later quarterback Sam DeTillio hit Alex Alvarez for the first touchdown of the game.

Avon didn’t start to pull away until late in the second quarter, allowing Berea-Midpark quarterback Luke Devins to throw for 194 first half yards and a pair of touchdowns.

The Eagles went into the locker room up 28-14 after Caffey’s third score in the final two minutes of the half.

Caffey scored three more touchdowns in the first half of the third quarter, putting the game into a running clock scenario.

Now with two regular season weeks left the Southwestern Conference title race is complete chaos. Avon, Berea-Midpark and Olmsted Falls all sit at 4-1 in the conference through five weeks of play and at the very least, two should tie for the championship.

Avon — which started the conference season off with a loss to Avon Lake — can win their sixth straight league title by winning their final two games of the year against Midview (3-5) and Amherst (0-8).

“We’re going to do the same thing we’ve been doing this entire time,” DeTillio said of the plan for the final two weeks of the season. “We’re going to put our heads down and work. I think execution is going to win us these next two games.”

Berea-Midpark travels to North Ridgeville (3-5) and hosts Olmsted Falls (6-3) in Week 10. That final game of the season could have major league title implications, with the winner earning a share of the championship.
