KENT » Kent State quarterback Dustin Crum’s first half rushing touchdown in Kent State’s Oct. 9 game against Buffalo has the Midview grad nearing a new milestone.

Crum now sits three scores away from passing Julian Edelman on the school’s alltime touchdown list for fourth place.

Edelman played quarterback for Kent State from 2006 to 2008 before a long and successful career in the NFL with the New England Patriots.

Crum’s score came on the opening drive of the game.

He took a zone read through the teeth of the Buffalo defense barreling over a Bulls defender before crossing the plane.

The former Ohio Mr. Football finalist threw for three touchdowns in the first three quarters of the game, helping Kent State build a 31-10 halftime lead.

Buffalo scored 24 unanswered to open the second half and briefly took the lead in the third quarter before Crum’s third touchdown pass in the opening seconds of the fourth quarter.

Now in his fifth year on the Flashes roster, Crum has Kent State as the favorites in the MAC East. The Flashes game against the Bulls was not completed in time for this edition.

Taming the Bulls

The last time Kent State beat Buffalo it kickstarted a winning streak that ended with a victory in the Frisco Bowl. That happened in 2019, the season that put the Flashes on the map as a team to watch in the MAC.

Kent State scored 24 unanswered in the fourth quarter to win 30-27, with Crum throwing both of his touchdowns in the quarter. At that point in his career Crum was just starting to make his name as the Flashes starter.

In the three games after the Week 10 win, he went on to throw for 855 yards with five touchdowns and no interceptions.

The Flashes lost to Buffalo in 2020, losing a 7041 shootout to the Bulls in their final week of the COVID shortened season. In that game Buffalo running back Jarret Patterson scored eight times and ran for 409 yards on just 36 carries.

Patterson now plays for the Washington Football Team.

Hall of famers

Kent State honored several alumni as inductees into the University’s Hall of Fame during halftime. Former NFL players Dri Archer, Roosevelt Nix and Brian Winters were amongst those honored.

Nix and Archer played for the Steelers in the 2010’s with Nix earning a ProBowl nod in 2017 as a fullback. Nix also won MAC defensive player of the year in 2010.

Archer was drafted in 2014 and played one year in the league for the Steelers.

Oakland A’s pitcher Andrew Chafin and PGA pro Mackenzie Hughes were also honored during the halftime ceremony amongst others.

What’s next

Kent State plays its first league road game of the season against Western Michigan. The Broncos are 4-2 and 1-1 in the MAC, with a win over Buffalo and a loss to Ball State on Oct. 9.
