Panthers’ Bredel breaks 1K career points
Elyria Catholic senior Annika Bredel entered the Panthers’ game against Strongsville needing six points to reach the 1,000-point mark in her storied career.
At home Jan. 24, Bredel scored 28 points in their 67-54 win over the Mustangs. Bredel has 1,022 career points and would need 375 points to become Elyria Catholic’s all-time leading scorer.
The accomplishment was achieved in the second quarter after Panthers trailed, 10-2, at the end of the first quarter.
It was a duel between Bredel and Strongsville’s Tayler Bass, who finished with 26 points and four 3-pointers.
Bredel scored the team’s only two points in the quarter. She then caught fire in the second, scoring 11 of Elyria Catholic’s 21 points to trail, 27-23, at halftime.
She was perfect from the freethrow line and it was infectious for the team, too, as the Panthers shot 16-of-25 from the line to help pull away in the fourth quarter.
After scoring four points in the third quarter, she then scored 11 points in the fourth quarter.
Isabelle Niederst (16 points) and Carter McCray (18 points) were the other Elyria Catholic players to finish in double digits.
The Panthers scored 20 or more points in every quarter but the first to hold off Strongsville’s MacKenzie Schultz (14 points), Ava Kadras (10) and Bass.
