The NFL scouting combine begins March 1, and so too does the Browns’ intense hunt for a wide receiver. At least one.

The Browns had no true No. 1 receiver on their roster by the end of 2021 — one of many factors contributing to a disappointing 8-9 finish. They are one of only three teams whose leader in the category had fewer than 600 receiving yards. The others were the Giants and Jets.

Jarvis Landry led the Browns with 570 receiving yards on a team-high 52 catches. He scored two receiving touchdowns and one on the ground. He missed four games recovering from a knee injury suffered in the game with Houston on Sept. 19 (the same game in which Baker Mayfield suffered a torn left labrum). Landry missed the Dec. 20 game with the Raiders because of COVID-19.

Landry is due $14.3 million in 2022 in the final season of the fiveyear contract he signed with the Browns in 2018 after being acquired in a trade with the Dolphins. He would be a dead cap hit of $1.5 million if the Browns decide to cut him.

“I have put the ball in CLE court by telling them I would like to stay,” Landry tweeted Feb. 22. “But if not, then I’m confident enough in myself to be a better healthy me this year and moving forward to helping do my part in winning a championship elsewhere.”

Landry caught 25 passes for 325 yards and both touchdowns over the last five games he played. Those numbers projected over 17 games work out to 85 catches for 1,105 yards and seven touchdowns.
