Construction on ALDI underway
Construction crews are working on building the new ALDI grocery store on the south end of Oberlin.
The store is being built at 14885 Route 58.
ALDI will neighbor the Advanced Auto Parts store.
Construction started approximately a few weeks ago and could be completed by the fall if all goes as planned, according to Carrie Porter, director of planning for the city.
“I know they’re shooting for sometime in October, but that’s depending on the weather,” Porter said.
Building plans approved last year by the city include a facility that will be about 19,000-squarefeet and will stay within the traditional decorations and design of ALDI stores throughout the state, the project development company has said.
The city currently is working in conjunction with its engineering department as well as the development company to construct appropriate turning lanes to address traffic issues, Porter said.
Whether the roadway will be widened remains to be seen, but officials are planning to add a northbound right turn lane into the store and a southbound left turn lane, Porter said.
Porter said she expects a concrete plan to be finalized in the next few months.
The developer, Carnegie Management and Development Corporation, owns and is managing the planning process of the project, according to Debbie Reed, a spokesperson for the developer.
Carnegie is affiliated with a number of ALDI stores throughout the state and act as the grocer’s landlord, Reed said.
“We are excited to confirm we are planning to open a new ALDI store in Oberlin, Ohio, later this year,” said Corey Stucker, vice president of ALDI’s Hinckley Division. “At ALDI, we streamline our approach to staffing, creating cost-saving efficiencies that are passed onto our customers.”
The Oberlin ALDI is expected to employ 15 to 20 people, as is typical at the chain’s other grocery supermarkets, Stucker said.
